Something magical happens when an artist “customizes” a vinyl production toy that he/she designed. For the artist, it’s a chance to experiment while still realizing a complete idea: Style matches sculpt. Aesthetic follows intention. Technique finishes form. For the fan, it’s an original, hand-painted sculpture disguised (and priced) as a customized toy. (See Travis Louie’s hand-painted Stan Skelves for another example.) Now that it’s midnight, and I’ve had my fun with milk cartons and cupcake trucks, it’s time to give you the full info on Yosiell Lorenzo‘s first ever edition of hand-painted Poison Sweets.
Back in November of 2010, Happy Panda Toys released the Poison Sweet vinyl toys. As vinyl toys typically require a production gestation of a year at minimum, a designer’s style may naturally evolve during this waiting period. Such was the case with Yosiell, and Poison Sweet dropped right as he was shifting from his previous moniker, “Project Detonate,” to his more authentic, but less pronounceable birth name, Yosiell Lorenzo.
These Hand-Painted “Sicklings” Poison Sweets are a bridge between the previous and current eras of Yosiell’s art. Individually painted in his warm color palette and spot-varnished in his Oakland studio, they’re not “factory-produced” Poison Sweets!
A total of seven Poison Sweets were lovingly prepared for adoption today at 11AM PST in the Shop Lorenzo webstore. Each 6-inch, hand-painted vinyl figure comes with a matching bone cupcake and hand-stained poem explaining the relationship between the Poison Sweets and the Sicklings. (Spoiler alert: it’s a good read!)
The “Sicklings” edition custom Poison Sweets are priced at $200 each for the 6 brown-toned figures and $250 for the 1 albino figure. All are hand-numbered and signed and come packaged in handsome collectors boxes with custom labeling. See you at Shop Lorenzo in eleven hours!
