The Hibernating Sicklings of Yosiell Lorenzo

The Hibernating Sicklings of Yosiell Lorenzo

If that most excellent Philadelphia-based museum of medical oddities, The Mütter Museum, curated its collection with imaginary curiosities instead of, for instance, Chang and Eng’s conjoined liver and John Wilkes Booth’s thoracic tissue, without a doubt, they would include Yosiell Lorenzo‘s Hibernating Sicklings.

Lorenzo’s latest batch of Sicklings has gone into hibernation-by-fishbowl: they are sleeping specimens of sadness for us to study. Lorenzo usually presents them in 2D, and last month, he released his first 3D Sicklings, the Curious Sicklings. The interplay of creepy-cute is a precarious balancing act, and one wart can tip a sweet character toward the grotesque. Although the lumps and bumps are still present, the new Hibernating Sicklings are a notch subtler with even sadder down-turned mouths and eyes that implore you…

A winter chill has cast this crop of Sicklings in a cooler color palette. The edition includes winter blue, pebble green, basil green, honeycomb brown and original brown/orange. Dibs on the basil…

The time and consideration that went into these figures shows. Each 4.5-inch resin Sickling is hand-cast and hand-painted by Yosiell. The specimen jars have a light brown tint with a puddle of clear epoxy and shredded aspen wood fibers.  The jars have custom labels and hang tags attached by twine. (The twine acts as a preservative, keeping The Sicklings moist as the cold temperature threatens their membranes.) In addition, the Hibernating Sicklings each come with a poem. Way to finish out the year in style!
