Gay Toys Against North Carolina’s Amendment 1!
|
We interrupt the daily design news for a reality check! Today, the people of North Carolina are voting on a disgusting and backwards law called Amendment 1. It seeks to further define marriage to the exclusion of same-sex couples, as well as opposite-sex couples who have been existing peacefully in civil unions. It’s incredibly sad and frustrating to me that our elected lawmakers are even allowed to put such a homophobic and single-minded agenda on the table. The only ‘solace’ is in knowing that we will all eventually look back on this with utter shame and embarrassment as we did with racism and civil rights.

Jon Knox has written a brave and thoughtful post about Amendment 1 here. A snippet reads:
There is enough love and opportunity available in this world to enable you to be yourself and live your life however you want, every single day — to accept love, success, happiness, and respect without guilt or hesitation. All of the ballots and bigots in the world combined do not have the power to take that away from you – so don’t let them.

UPDATE! This just in via Twitter!

Not to stray too far from the purpose and intent of this blog, but it’s worth pointing out that regardless of this shameful amendment, gay and lesbian couples in NC will still not be allowed to marry. State laws already prevent this, but this amendment additionally builds this discrimination into the state constitution. It would prevent any legal recognition of any unmarried relationship such as civil unions, it could even deny legal protections and health insurance benefits to unwed heterosexual couples and their children.
There are several NC city and county governments that provide domestic partner benefits to the families of their employees. If Amendment One passes, local governments would no longer be able to provide those benefits. Hundreds of adults and children currently covered by health insurance would lose coverage.
Please urge friends and family in NC to go out and vote before the polls close!
