MONSTARS Kaiju Show at Lower Haters Gallery
|I know what you’re thinking: kaiju and fixies; it’s just like chocolate and peanut butter, right? Not really actually, but that didn’t stop Hiro Hayashi from curating a 6-man custom kaiju show at the Lower Haters Gallery in San Francisco this past weekend.
Sure there were hipsters. But there were also Beetlars Deka Skullbees (painted by Hiro).
Please go to LiLJAPAN Art’s Flickr to see his ink and wash 2D pieces. My camera was having a bad day and the gallery lighting was rough. Plus, you’ll gain insight like this note about his work entitled Is This Love?: “This piece represents how we, the collectors, have a really powerful heart to enjoy and accept Kaiju toys.” That quote could possibly be the mission of Monstars, which showcased the work of six friends, several of whom are local.
Lamour Supreme showed 5 drawings. Underneath, if you squint, is one upcoming limited edition Kaiju Chronicle Beetlar.
LASH brought the Sludge Demons.
Paul Kaiju represented in resin.
Toybot Studios rocked a Rangeas.
And Bert Gatchalian zigged some Zags. (The tall guy glows in the dark, too.) Sorry these pictures suck. Consider stopping by the gallery to check out the toys, paintings and drawings under better conditions. Congrats to Hiro and all of the artists on bringing something scarier than Nag Champa to Haight Street.
