Organic Updates from David Choong Lee
|While I was in the area to see Frank Kozik and Winston Smith’s Seditions and Jay Howell’s Enthusiastic Person, I thought I could make the afternoon even more awesome by checking out David Choong Lee’s Organic Updates. Alas, Organic Updates was such an involved exhibition that 111 Minna began the uninstall a day early.
David was nice enough to let us come in anyway, and there was plenty of art still to be seen.
It was interesting to watch him take the work apart. It felt like a “sneak peak” into the artist’s process, as well as an opportunity to see the individual elements of the larger pieces.
Watching the paintings come off the wall, I asked about how they got on the wall. During the install, Choong Lee would actually paint canvases “on the fly” as he was creating the installations. He’d conceive the idea and then create what was needed to implement it. I wish I’d seen that!
David Choong Lee’s art combines elements of complexity art, abstraction and realistic urban portraiture. He lives, works and teaches in San Francisco. Visit his Facebook page for photos of how Organic Updates looked when it opened. Click through for a few snaps of what I saw when it closed.
