Low Brow High Fashion: The Cartoon Couture of JC de Castelbajac

There’s a fine line between rocking a unique style referencing pop culture and wearing Stan Marsh shoulder pads. JC de Castelbajac explores this gray area in his latest ready-to-wear couture, proving a TV show with talking feces DOES have a place on the runway.

JC’s website greets you with a single rainbow all the way across the screen, some flying saucers and the incantation to “Go! Go! Go! Diva!” I took the bait and clicked over to the webshop, where I met a young lady standing on a chair in an art museum wearing an all-over print South Park shirt dress and matching leggings. I’m not sure who is braver, her or the skinny guy below seen just before he left his house in a Kyle Broflovski cardigan and got his ass kicked.

Despite my snark, there’s something about all this that I like. I wouldn’t rock the South Park gear personally, but I think we can all agree that the Kermit the Frog plush shawl and matching hat from de Castelbajac’s Fall 2009 Muppets range would really complement my eyes.
