Recycled Labbit by Donald Edwards

Donald Edwards is a Baltimore-based artist who uses recycled materials to form his sculptures. He collects his medium from thrift stores, yard sales, dumpsters and by saving resources from work and home that would have otherwise gone to the land fill. He calls his work: junk art.

The great site Junkculture writes: “In his work, he is trying to fetishize consumer culture and its role in our everyday lives.” I don’t have anything particularly profound to say, except that I noted 1) He likes Frank Kozik’s Labbits and 2) He is a member of several OCD art-themed groups on Flickr.

Edwards’ work functions as a good reminder for folks who resist collecting because of plastic’s adverse environmental impact: Embrace the DIY ethos and make them yourself! (Bonus points if your raw materials would have ended up at the junkyard.)

Edwards also makes other sculptures, including these “junkballs”. Perhaps with every few junkballs, a vinyl toy collector’s carbon footprint is slightly offset… Click through for some closeups of the junkballs and a view of Edwards’ studio.

So is each sculpture held together by the cables around it? Otherwise, that’d be a lot of little pieces to glue together. I’m interested in finding out more about his process.

You always post such interesting articles!
