Toys by Design: Felt Mistress

Written on by jeremy

Design Bureau x Felt Mistress

My seventh Toys by Design column for Design Bureau is a special one. While vinyl toy art is often misunderstood by the greater design world, plush toy art is worse off, typically getting dismissed as fodder for craft fairs. So bravo to Design Bureau‘s publisher, Chris Force, for taking a risk on the soft side of design. My latest column presents the fabulous “stitch kitsch” of Wales-based Louise Evans (aka Felt Mistress). The January/February 2012 issue is hitting news stands now. Look for the man in white, Karim Rashid, on the cover. (Is that an original Dalek in the background???)

Jeremy thinks...

Olly Moss: "If you look at classic art, a lot of it is religious and mythic iconography and symbolism. Now a days it’s a similar thing: It’s just instead of having Hercules, Athena and Apollo it’s Darth Vader and Optimus Prime."
