Comings and Goings: Dudebox USA (Comings)

Dudebox USA

Dudebox burst onto the UK designer toy scene from seemingly out of nowhere with two (count ’em, two) full sets of blind-boxed artist platform toys, additional larger artist toys, and their own DIY blank figure, The Dude. It was an impressive debut that came with its own website and bespoke webstore, full social media presence, involvement from top UK toy customizers and a contest in cahoots with Pete Fowler. The only problem? It was 2010,  which, depending on how you look at it, felt like 5-10 years past the “sell by date” for the freshness factor of platform toys.

But Dudebox weathered the storm. They didn’t suffer the same production setbacks of fellow UK designer toy company, Arts Unknown, and they didn’t appear to blow their wad as quickly as Inner Sanctum. So, while the legendary James Jarvis and Amos Toys declared their project as being complete this year, Dudebox is apparently just getting started.

Dudebox’s “Dude” DIY toy has the right balance of abstraction and anthropomorphism to make it popular with toy customizers. It is one of very few blank DIY toys amid a sea of surplus that, with proper promotion, could actually challenge Kidrobot’s market-dominant Munny. On that note, today, Dudebox announced the creation of Dudebox USA, a new storefront that will sell its wares in US dollars (for all us Yankees who can’t be arsed to calculate the GBP to USD exchange rate). USA! USA! USA!

If you haven’t given Dudebox a look yet, now might be a good time. It’s sort of nice to see an American Flag that’s not attached to the steely cold hand of a Tea Partier, and they’re offering free shipping on orders over $100.
