Minimalist Designer Chairs That Look Like The Simpsons
|56th Studio is a multi-disciplinary quirky design studio primarily based in Bangkok. They’re a “luxe-personified yet kitschy, neo-ethnic, eclectically bold and youthful” trio who “embrace pop and mainstream culture, hijack existing forms and make sarcastic commentary out of it”.
They recently launched Caricature as Furniture, a project with the tagline: “Bad drawing is a good chair”. Caricature as Furniture began as an exploration of minimal illustration and expanded into pieces of furniture, notably these Simpsons chairs.
What’s enchanting about the craft of caricature drawing is, we believe, the exaggeration of distinctive features. We believe that objects possess power of communication; therefore, we decided to take a tongue-in-cheek look at investigating Pop and Hollywood Culture in tangible forms, in hoping that it would make the line that separates Graphic from Furniture become thinner. Most people like their caricature drawing only when it is drawn one step prettier than they usually are.
Anyone who has ever been to a bar/bat mitzvah knows they speak the truth.
The collection consists of nine chairs.
In addition to the wonderful Homer, Bart, Lisa and Marge Simpson chairs, 56th Studio makes seats for Harry Potter, Grace Jones, Lady Gaga, Naomi Campbell and Hedwig. Theyalso offer extensive wood stain and upholstery color customization options for the chairs, which range from ~ $600 USD to ~ $900 USD.
It’s not just that the chairs are appealing and quirky and cute; it’s that everything from their conceptual ideas to their visualized objects to their written descriptions make me want to give 56th Studio a big virtual hug. Maybe the folks who live in this Simpsons-theme house will stock up? Good stuff!
