Alan Belcher JPEG Icons

Jpegs by Alan Belcher

Toronto-based “photo-object” artist Alan Belcher’s latest work turns Apple’s JPEG icon into an edition of ceramic tiles. Belcher writes:

The ephemeral nature of the universal jpeg has been addressed, and the default Jpeg icon has been solidified into a standard image surrogate — creating thus the ultimate photo-object.

Cleverly, the tiles are titled just “____.jpg”. They were made in an edition of 125 signed and numbered pieces, measuring 10″ x 7 5/8″ x 2 3/4″. The art multiples were produced for the recent exhibition, 25 Years of Talent, at Marianne Boesky Gallery in New York.

Alan Belcher listed 6 of the tiles on eBay at $450 each, but the auction ended without buyers. The term “iconic” tends to get overused (present company guilty as charged), so it’s fun to kind of look at this work as an “iconic icon”. Popject by concept, art multiple in price. Gotta love it!
