Coarse Toys Jaws Dissected by Jason Freeny

Following along with the last few posts that detail interesting, yet expensive art objects you will never get to have…here is the latest work by Jason Freeny, who dissected this Jaws figure by Coarse Toys for a commission. Most collectors would agree that in terms of art, craft and price, Coarse Toys are up there with the “holy grails”. I usually have an adverse reaction to seeing customizations on these kinds of pieces. Weren’t they pretty perfect as is? You thought you could do better? Seeing many of the customs, I get that same sensation of hearing yet another teenager has OD’d on bath salts: what a waste.

But Jason Freeny’s piece is different. He doesn’t simply paint or sculpt over the existing figure in his own style. Rather, he strips away half of the figure to reveal production-quality innards. The dissection adds to the story of the piece: perhaps the character has been eaten by a shark? Having talked at length with Mark Landwehr about the precision of Coarse Toys, I actually think the designer would be pleased with this unique tribute.
