Filed under Unlikely Bedfellows: This morning, Disney released the Waves tee for $24.95. The black shirt features the iconic Peter Saville image melded with a Mickey Mouse head.
Inspired by the iconic sleeve of Joy Division’s Unknown Pleasures album, this Waves Mickey Mouse Tee incorporates Mickey’s image within the graphic of the pulse of a star. That’s appropriate given few stars have made bigger waves than Mickey!
Either somebody high up in Disney apparel likes Joy Division or someone has a very dark sense of humor. Every pop culture pundit has already gotten in jabs at hipster dads or conspiracy theories about Walt Disney’s Nazi leanings and the origins of the name “Joy Division”. As a result, the curious shirt is now sold out. KAWS pillages Disney; Disney pillages design. I guess it’s the New Order.
