Laurent Craste Takes a Crack at Porcelain

Several artists and manufacturers have been redefining the way we see porcelain, but no one’s taken such a direct crack at the material’s traditional heritage as French artist Laurent Craste.

In this series of ceramic sculptures, Craste has used porcelain vases, representative of certain upper class tastes, and laid into them with a variety of blunt objects, essentially critiquing the fussy conservatism of both this group and the medium itself.

What’s particularly interesting to me is how when viewed through the lens of ‘human suffering’ (by way of hatchet, crowbar or dart), the vases become anthropomorphic. Very cool.
