Hi, I'm Jeremy, and I like to write about toys.
In 1999, I got a job at a Japanese toy portal. That ignited a passion for collecting small toys that had been dormant since the days of Smurfs. Toys were plentiful, but funding the habit remained elusive. Then, in 2002 a desk job positioned me in front of a large computer screen with a T1 line to eBay (and some disposable income). I began discovering my now-favorite artists through toys. In 2004, I came face to face with a KAWS Chum at the Beautiful Losers show in San Francisco. After that, I was hooked on art toys. From 2008-2009, I was Editor-in-Chief of ToyCyte. I now do most of my writing for Neon Monster, but I still occasionally postulate and pontificate on toys and trends for a variety of blogs.
Recently, I adopted the moniker, "Toy maven" after it was consistently applied to me. Aside from being a new convert to the thinking of Malcolm Gladwell, I am a big fan of the writings of Chuck Klosterman, Will Self, Tom Robbins and Neil Gaiman. The rest of my bookshelf is rounded out by great design compendiums and art tomes, a few written collections on my favorite era of music (1977-1984) and a personal favorite topic: books that go behind the scenes with artists and writers, detailing the private rituals and idiosyncratic behaviors to which we are all prone. There's also a privileged place on the shelf for The Andy Warhol Diaries and all books and videos pertaining to Twin Peaks--both being moments (movements?) that forever altered the course of my life.
Want to know more? Read an interview. See my toy collection. Listen to my music. Peep my pics.
